IELTS vs PTE: Which English Test Should You Take?

If you are planning to study abroad or apply for a visa, you will almost certainly need an English test score. The two most popular choices are IELTS and PTE. Both are accepted by thousands of universities and many immigration authorities — but they test your English in very different ways. Choosing the one that matches your strengths can make a real difference to your score.

The biggest difference: human vs computer

In IELTS, your Speaking test is a face-to-face conversation with a trained examiner, and your Writing is marked by human examiners. In PTE, everything happens on a computer: you speak into a microphone, type your answers, and the whole test is scored automatically.

  • ✓Choose IELTS if you are more comfortable talking to a real person and prefer a natural conversation.
  • ✓Choose PTE if you get nervous in front of an examiner, or if you type faster than you write by hand.

Test format at a glance

IELTS has four separate sections — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — and takes around 2 hours 45 minutes. Scores are given as bands from 0 to 9. There are two versions: IELTS Academic (for university study) and IELTS General Training (often used for work and migration).

PTE Academic takes about 2 hours and combines skills in its tasks — for example, "Summarize Spoken Text" tests both listening and writing. Scores are given on a scale from 10 to 90. PTE Core is a separate version designed for Canadian immigration.

How fast do you get results?

PTE results usually arrive within about two days, which helps if you have a close deadline. Computer-delivered IELTS results typically arrive within a few days, while paper-based IELTS takes longer. Always check the current timings with the test provider before you book.

Which one is accepted where you are going?

This is the most important question. Both tests are widely accepted by universities in the UK, Australia, Canada and beyond, but requirements differ by university, course and visa type. Before choosing, check the exact test name and minimum score your university or immigration authority asks for — for example, some UK visas require a specific "UKVI" version of the test.

Our recommendation

  • ✓Strong speaker who likes conversation → IELTS usually feels more natural.
  • ✓Comfortable with computers, good typing speed, needs results quickly → PTE is often a good fit.
  • ✓Applying for Canadian PR → look at PTE Core or IELTS General Training, depending on current requirements.

Whichever you choose, the key to a high score is practising the exact question types under timed conditions. That is exactly what our IELTS and PTE courses focus on.
